The Scenic Route: By The Book

Originally Published in Trailer Life Magazine

On our year-long travels along The Scenic Route, we’ve used a number of sources to uncover some of the many interesting stories we’ve brought to you here and in the pages of Trailer Life magazine.

While we’ve found the National Scenic Byways program’s website to be a good starting place for planning our journeys, in many cases the information we’ve found there left us wanting more details. Which is where National Geographic Guide to Scenic Highways & Byways: The 300 Best Drives In The U.S.  comes in.

Now out in a new Fourth Edition, this 496-page guidebook lives up to its subtitle with the addition of 25 new scenic drives.  With double the number of routes recognized by the National Scenic Byways program conveniently broken down into ten distinct geographic regions, if there’s a dramatic stretch of road between Alaska’s Aleutian Islands and the tip of the Florida Keys that’s not featured here, I’d be hard-pressed to name it.

In addition to the informative overviews of each of the routes, the book includes more than 350 color photos to help you decide where to go and 280 detailed maps to help get you there.  All of which leads me to conclude that, like the previous edition, this new version of National Geographic Guide to Scenic Highways & Byways will become an important part of our rolling library.
