For most drivers, the amount of time wasted in traffic jams is increasing. The Texas
Transportation Institute’s annual study of traffic times has found that the average driver
in the United States now spends 51 hours a year sitting in traffic, up four hours in the
past five years. Los Angeles drivers had it the worst, spending about 90 hours sitting in
traffic. San Francisco-Oakland came in second at 68 hours, and Denver placed third with 64
hours spent in traffic. For a few cities — San Antonio, Texas; Fresno, California; and
Pensacola, Florida — traffic jams actually dropped.
