Storrie Lake sits at the edge of Las Vegas, New Mexico, and the lake’s
proximity and small size allow locals — and visiting RVers — to feel
like they own it. And in a sense they do, since Storrie Lake State Park
belongs to the people.
The lake gets plenty of use. Anglers ply the water for catfish, crappie
and stocked rainbow trout, motorboat enthusiasts speed across the
surface and sailors take advantage of the prevailing afternoon winds.
Summer weekends may prove too raucous for RVers seeking peace and quiet,
but spring and fall generally provide ideal weather and camping
solitude.
RVers and tenters alike can settle in right at the water’s edge
in the primitive area, or they can select an electric-hookup site among
the cottonwoods within easy walking distance of the lake. Cabana-style
shelters add an element of old-time New Mexico and provide picnic tables
and protection from the elements. Birders should visit in late fall and
winter to see Canada geese and various species of duck. No matter when
RVers visit, however, they should be sure to explore nearby Las Vegas
itself, a town overflowing with history.
