Snowbird Getaways: New Mexico

Originally Published in Trailer Life Magazine

The best way for snowbirds to experience the enchantment of New Mexico is to drive a few of its 24 scenic byways. In the northeast, you’ll encounter Indian ruins and pueblos on the Jemez Mountain Trail Scenic Byway. Dry Cimarron in the northeast allows you to view wagon ruts on the Santa Fe Trail, tour a mining camp, see dinosaur tracks and walk in the crater of a volcano. The southwest’s Geronimo Trail provides easy access to fishing and camping at Elephant Butte Lake and Caballo Lake. And Guadalupe Back Country Scenic Byway in the southeast serves as a catalyst to biking, caving, horseback riding, backpacking, wildlife viewing and dining outdoors at Sitting Bull Falls picnic area.

Of course, U.S. Route 66, the famed Mother Road, splits the state from east to west, doling out roadside Americana at practically every mile marker. And the Rio Grande River bisects New Mexico from north to south, providing snowbirds liquid refreshment to go with their rubber-tire excursions. Once you’ve explored Santa Fe’s art galleries, sampled its cuisine and perused its Native American loomed rugs, woven baskets and turquoise jewelry, you may want to watch the colorful hot-air dance above Albuquerque in October’s Balloon Fiesta.

Your winter days will be filled with trips to some of the world’s largest caves in Carlsbad Caverns National Park and to the nearby Living Desert State Park. Catching a sporting event or investigating the cultural scene at the University of New Mexico in Las Cruces may prove beneficial after you’ve checked out the International UFO Museum in Roswell. Take in the blanched beauty of White Sands National Monument, then resist the temptation to tell a lie in Truth or Consequences — just to see what happens. Call (800) 733-6396.
