Siemens VDO has introduced a piezo-injection design that it says sets
new standards for emission reductions in diesel and gas engines. The
company is now offering piezo common-rail diesel injection systems for
engines up to 6.5 liters. These create extremely high-injection
pressures to finely atomize fuel with rapid switching, which enables the
fuel injection to be adjusted in real time to the engine’s load and
throttle position. The technology uses flexible multiple fuel injections
during a power stroke, so the stages of combustion can be optimized.
Compared to conventional diesel engines, piezo common-rail
technology can improve fuel consumption 15 percent and emissions are
lowered.
