Almost 8 million people annually head to the Texas city that has been a cultural crossroads for hundreds of years – San Antonio. Of course, the historic event that put the city on the map – and granted Americans the famous battle cry, “Remember the Alamo!” – took place in 1836, when 189 men defended the Mission San Antonio de Valero against 4,000 Mexican troops for 13 days. Visitors to San Antonio today almost invariably tour The Alamo shrine and museum downtown. Yet travelers who visit San Antonio during the winter holidays can learn about the city’s intricate past as well as indulge in the numerous seasonal celebrations. Holiday cheer is easy to find along the city’s famous River Walk. Cobblestones and flagstones line either side of the river as it wends its way through quiet, natural stretches, then slips past European-style outdoor cafes and vibrant nightclubs where revelers delight in hot-toddy-fueled celebrations. A float down the river with Yanaguana Cruises, past the twinkling lights and seasonal decorations, will certainly help visitors get into the holiday spirit. A handful of art-oriented events spices up the season, and the Holiday River Parade & Lighting Ceremony, which takes place on Novmber 28, should elicit a “Ho, ho, ho” from even the biggest Grinch.
