Q. I have a fifth-wheel that has Goodyear G159 tires, size LT2358516. I am not sure, but I would guess they are between 3 and 4 years old, and have less than 7,500 miles on them. The tread still appears to be very good, and there is no weather checking on sidewalls — plus, I keep them covered when not in use. Are they still safe for a 1,500-mile trip?

A. You’re in good shape for now, D.H. The recommended age for in-service tires is about five years, so you have a ways to go. Keeping them covered during storage certainly helps you get the most out of the tires, and making frequent inspections is also a good idea. Once they exceed the five-year age limit, you might want to think about replacement.
