Opus, a manufacturer of premium folding trailers designed for off-grid use, recently introduced its first hard-sided hybrid that sets a high bar on the luxury end of overland-style trailers. Named for its 15-foot travel length, the OP 15′ Hybrid Caravan has a rear extension that enlarges the living area, and a pop-up top that raises the roof for 6 feet, 5 inches of headroom. Making the interior seem even roomier, the kitchen is outdoors, with two pullout compartments housing a stainless-steel sink, large four-burner stove and 70-liter Dometic electric cooler.
The OP 15′ rides on a galvanized steel chassis with a trailing-arm independent suspension and dual shocks. An articulating coupler allows easy towing over rugged terrain. Diamond plating protects the two tanks that carry a combined 63 gallons of freshwater. Gray- and black-water tanks hold 17 and 10 gallons respectively.
Inside, the OP 15′ Hybrid Caravan caters to families with a king bed in the rear, twin bunks and a cozy dinette.
The trailer is as well appointed as it is rugged looking. Bamboo cabinetry and leatherette seating line the interior, and amenities range from a 76-by-71-inch king-size bed and twin bunks to a wet bath with a shower, sink and plumbed toilet. A built-in air conditioner and Truma furnace and hot-water system are standard. Power is supplied by triple AGM 12-volt batteries linked to a 300-watt solar panel or via a 30-amp-hour main power inlet. It’s off-grid camping in style.
The low-profile trailer (7 feet, 10 inches tall when the roof is closed) has a 6,600-pound gross vehicle weight rating, a claimed 1,640 cargo-carrying capacity and a $45,000 price tag.
The roof pops up for added headroom, and the back extends to open up the interior. In travel mode, it’s is a nimble, aerodynamic package.
