Road Trip USA

Originally Published in MotorHome Magazine

Subtitled “Cross-Country Adventures on America’s Two-Lane Highways,”
this third edition of Jamie Jensen’s softcover is a comprehensive
resource for travelers who prefer not to take the Interstates. Although
not designed for RVers, most of the information is applicable to us
also. Readers can glean from its more than 900 pages what they want or
need to know about traveling any of these highways.

Among the 11 covered routes are the Appalachian Trail (paralleling the
hiking trail by vehicle from Maine to Georgia), the Great River Road
(following the Mississippi from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico) and Route
66 (from Chicago, Illinois, to Los Angeles, California). Each chapter
includes an introduction, then state-by-state segments describing what
to see along that route; simple maps help readers pinpoint the towns
through which the route passes.

Cities are given short shrift in mini-guides. They include museums,
state and national parks, historic sites, lakes, beaches and rivers.

Attractions, both man-made and natural, are described succinctly.
Phone numbers, dates of operation and admission fees are provided. In
addition, roadside eateries, including old-fashioned diners, are
suggested alternatives to fast-food chains. Of course, RVers can skip
the lodging suggestions.

Adding to the reader’s entertainment are historical and cultural
trivia. And small but eye-catching photographs, pictures and sketches,
some in color, punctuate the pages.
