Q & A: Transmission Fluid Temp Gauge

Originally Published in MotorHome Magazine

Q. I tow a heavy dinghy vehicle with my motorhome and have installed a
transmission fluid temperature gauge in the pan of my automatic transmission. What is the
maximum recommended temperature?

A. For short bursts, such as hill climbs,
the maximum temperature should not exceed 275 degrees F. If it begins to reach that
temperature, pull over to the side of road in a safe place and allow the transmission to
cool by fast-idling the engine with the gear selector in Park.
