Every year, from Memorial Day through the Little League Baseball World Series playoff in
August, the Peter J. McGovern Little League Museum in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, is a big hit with the whole family, especially for those on a motorhome vacation.
Entering into the low, modern brick building is like hitting an inside-the-park home run. The lobby is a re-creation of nearby Lamade Stadium – including a baseball diamond scaled 2/3 the size of an actual Little League field. The museum includes one of the largest photographic murals ever taken; the 110 x 15-foot image was shot during the 1982 Little League World Series. The Museum’s Hall of Excellence honors many former Little Leaguers, such as Tom Seaver, Cal Ripkin Jr., Nolan Ryan, Kareem-Abdul Jabbar, General Peter Pace and Kevin Costner.
One of the most popular sections of the interactive facility for fathers and sons
(and mothers and daughters, too) is the Play Ball Room – the museum encourages adults and
offspring to test their hitting, pitching and base-running talents. They then can view
their performance on instant video playback. Another exhibit lets visitors try their hand
at calling the play-by-play of a recorded World Series game.
