On Track to Adventure

Originally Published in MotorHome Magazine

Rail-trails, recycled rail lines, open linear paths for multiple-use recreation. But by
keeping these corridors open and viable, the nation also preserves these critical links
should transportation demands change in the future. The tracks have been removed, the
routes cleared and often the bed resurfaced (paved or cinder-topped). Any trestles are made trail-safe or are skirted by paths. The nonprofit Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) has led the way in reclaiming these routes, leading to the creation of nearly 1,200 rail-trails, covering more than 2,000 miles, with routes in every state. If you haven’t taken advantage of the boon, pull up a seat and see what rail-trails can offer you.
