One time when we were camping, the side of our neighbor’s awning collapsed because the pin slipped on the arm.
I offered the owner a couple of spring clips to insert in the adjustment holes so it wouldn’t happen again. Now I use spring clips on my RV’s awning each time to guard against slipping.
