Nissan has reportedly developed a clear-coat paint called Scratch Guard Coat that repairs itself when scratched. The paint contains an elastic resin that helps prevent scratches from reaching the inner layers of the paint.
When scratched, the surface is said to blend together to its original state within a few days. The length of time depends on the depth of the scratch and the temperature.
Scratch Guard Coat is said to be water repellent and effective for approximately three years. It will provide better protection against scratches from carwash machines, which account for the majority of paint damage. Nissan plans to offer it in the near future on an SUV.
