According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), defective cruise-control switches may lead to a recall of as many as 3.7 million Ford trucks and SUVs.
The vehicles included in the NHTSA study are Ford F-150s from 1995-1999 and 2001-2002 model years, and Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs from 1997-1999 and 2001-2002. An earlier recall involved the 2000 model-year vehicles of each, involving about 800,000 vehicles.
The cruise-control switch in the vehicles could cause fires under the hood, even when the ignition is off. NHTSA has logged 218 complaints about the affected vehicles; all occurred when the vehicle was parked and ignition was off. No injuries were reported.
