The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently proposed an increase in Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for light trucks from the current 20.7 mpg, to 21 mpg in 2005, to 21.6 mpg in 2006 and to 22.2 mpg in 2007.
CAFE for other passenger vehicles will remain at 27.5 mpg, unchanged since 1990. NHTSA claims the proposed rules will cut fuel consumption by 2.5 billion gallons over the implementation period of the CAFE regulations.
