The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) plans to test new vehicles for how well they resist rollovers and rate them.
Proposed rollover standards would deal with rollover avoidance systems and strengthened roofs to reduce head-injury damage. NHTSA would like to start issuing standards by the end of this year for increased occupant protection in rollover situations.
The agency will begin extensive tests of 2004-model cars and trucks starting in September.
