Meditation Mount

Originally Published in MotorHome Magazine

Once, bison and Cherokee Indians roamed across what is now Reflection Riding Arboretum and
Botanical Garden in Chattanooga, Tennessee. During the Civil War, this peaceful site echoed
with the sound of gunfire. Now, miles of trails for cars and feet wind through the tranquil
300-acre historic site on Lookout Mountain. Drive the three-mile loop of the main park for
an overview of the woodland gardens, reflection ponds and wildflower meadows. Or walk the
Profile Trail and stop by a millstone used to grind grain near Lookout Creek. Through the
opening in the rock you can make out a face on the topside of the mountain. Legend has it
that when a dying Indian chief prayed for a sign that he and his tribe would not be
forgotten, a great storm carved his likeness in the sandstone. Enter Reflection Riding
through the adjacent Chattanooga Nature Center.
