When purchasing a high-end motorhome, buyers can sometimes have difficulty deciding between an upscale gas coach or a budget-priced diesel-pusher. Potential owners want a heavy-duty chassis, and are not willing to sacrifice interior comfort or convenience features. It’s a common situation, one that can lead some RVers to purchase more coach than they need — or can afford — to get what they want.
Four Winds International offers one solution to this problem with its Magellan line of gas coaches built on the rugged Workhorse W22 and W24 chassis. “There are a lot of consumers out there today who want the comfort features and aesthetic values of a diesel motorhome, but they don’t want to spend $200,000 to get them,” commented Scott Jacobson, national sales manager for Four Winds. “But if they can spend between $107,000 and $129,000, they can get many of the features they’re looking for in the
Magellan.”
To make his point, Jacobson suggested that diesel coaches are often characterized by details such as hydraulically-operated leveling jacks and multiple slide rooms, pass-through storage and 50-amp service, all of which the Magellan possesses. At the same time, the price was kept low by eliminating extra-cost details, such as dovetail drawers. Step into the largest of the Magellan line, the four-slide-equipped 38E (pictured) and it’s unlikely you’ll miss anything. Starting up front, the cockpit features Flexsteel seating, back-up camera (with audio) and an AM/FM/CD/cassette stereo with weather band.
The living area features a leather Euro-recliner and 27-inch flat-screen television, and
expands with opposing slideout rooms. On the street side, there’s a booth dinette and
hide-a-bed sofa, while a smaller curbside slide accommodates the kitchen area. Solid
surface countertops, a double-bowl stainless-steel sink, three-burner range, convection
microwave and an 8-cubic-foot refrigerator should find favor with traveling chefs. Oak
cabinetry is abundant (cherry and maple are optional), and day/night shades are used
throughout. Aft of the kitchen is a large bath area that contains a china toilet, neo-angle
shower and lav. A door in the hallway, as well as a pocket door to the master suite, make
for easy access by owners and guests alike.
In the bedroom, a curbside slide makes room for the queen-size bed, while a street-side slide accommodates a 20-inch flat-screen television and vanity with overhead cabinets. At the far rear is another wardrobe, and room for an optional washer-dryer combo. Other options include full-body paint, a 400-watt inverter, dual-pane windows, central vacuum system, 12-cubic-foot refrigerator and a home theater system with DVD player and recessed ceiling speakers.
