Luxury Toy Haulers

Originally Published in Trailer Life Magazine

For off-pavement enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers, the evolution of the sport-utility recreational vehicle (SURV) has been fascinating to watch. It began with loading your off-pavement vehicles into a simple automotive trailer that was towed behind your RV or truck, or by somebody else in your group if your tow vehicle couldn’t handle the extra weight. The next step was to enclose the trailer, build tie-down eyelets into the floor of a garage area, install a loading ramp on the back wall and add a folding bed or two. Plumbing and appliances came next, transforming the utility trailers into fully self-contained units suitable for living for a short period of time.

However, owners and prospective buyers wanted more. Just because they like to spend a day on the dunes or biking in the mountains doesn’t necessarily mean they want to sacrifice livability and luxury. Solid-surface countertops, leather furniture, home theater systems and even electric fireplaces have worked their way into today’s designs. And for SURV owners who don’t own outdoor toys, the garage area can be utilized for all sorts of activities from antiquing to an art studio or extra work space all surrounded by luxurious appointments previously found exclusively in conventional travel trailers or fifth-wheels.

To give you a sampling of what’s available today, we’ve gathered some luxurious SURVs that offer amenities comparable to even the most upscale Class A motorhomes.

Dutchmen Voltage 3800

The Dutchmen Voltage features welded aluminum side walls with a high-gloss gelcoat fiberglass exterior, a 3-inch thick vacuum-bonded floor and a 102-inch-wide body and 12-inch steel twin I-beam chassis to make sure the trailer remains road ready for years to come. Plus, a front cap that the company claims will provide a 30 percent improvement in turning radius and a backup mirror makes it easy to tow. Inside, luxurious features such as a 40-inch HD LCD TV and a 1,000-watt entertainment system with surround sound should keep everyone entertained once you’ve called it a day. All the custom residential furniture with recliners should keep you comfortable while doing so. The quartz countertops throughout offer an upscale atmosphere, and dual wardrobes and nightstands, a dresser and a walk-around queen bed in the master bedroom add to the residential feel. An exterior entertainment center package ($3,950) can be added for additional entertainment options. The available garage package ($1,430) will get owners an LCD TV with DVD player, 22-inch diamond plating and washer/dryer prep, among other niceties.

Jayco Seismic 3914

With sleeping spaces for up to 10 people, the Jayco Seismic 3914 ensures you can bring along the whole family — and a few friends — for your outdoor adventure. The Seismic boasts an impressive list of standard luxury appointments, including solid-surface countertops, pendant lighting, an impressive entertainment system, toe-kick cabinet lighting and an oversized 21-inch oven. The dual-basin sink is located in the kitchen island, maximizing prep space and adding to the “wow” factor. The tall slideouts and curved walls make the trailer seem even larger than it is, and the Megaview dinette windows allow you to bring the outside in. The 30-by-72-inch cargo door allows plenty of room for loading toys on the 3,000-pound-rated cargo ramp, and the screened patio door offers the option of an open-air seating area. A queen loft near the garage is a nice touch, while the outside entertainment center is a luxury that may be tough to live without once you’ve experienced it.

Keystone Fuzion 390

Keystone Fuzion 390

Keystone Fuzion 390

Keystone has taken note of the fact that some SURV owners use the garage area for other things than motorized toys. As such, the large 12-foot garage area, complete with a 9-foot ceiling, has evolved into an ideal location for transporting antique furniture, a work shop, collectibles and, yes, ATVs or motorcycles. When you’re in camp, the garage area has twin opposing sofas that convert into a queen bed. The galley features a two-basin sink in a kitchen island that also serves as a bar for additional mealtime seating. A 40-inch loft near the garage is a great place to store equipment (or to sleep on the 60-by-80-inch mattress). The solid-wood cabinetry is constructed with screws, not staples, and the recessed lighting, solid-surface countertops and upgraded appliances add to the overall luxurious feeling.

Keystone Raptor 310TS

Keystone Raptor 310TS

Keystone Raptor 310TS

Chances are you’ve seen a Keystone Raptor in camp or on the road. That’s because the popular toy hauler has been designed to infuse outdoor adventure with residential luxury. The 12-foot garage area is augmented by twin auxiliary 30-gallon fuel tanks for your toys. The garage features a loft with a twin bed and double electric-queen beds with a U-shaped lounge. Perhaps best of all, a residential-style door offers access to the garage, meaning you can shut off that part of the trailer and not affect livability whatsoever.

The L-shaped counter in the galley area offers plenty of prep space, and the Corian countertop is easy on the eyes, and easy to clean. A large 12-cubic-foot refrigerator is a definite luxury item, while the upgraded furniture, walk-around queen bed and entertainment center with a 40-inch LCD TV make it easy to spend more time indoors, even if you’re in the high desert.

New Horizons Majestic

New Horizons Majestic

The Majestic F42TY4SS has been designed to be exactly like the well-known, luxurious trailer, but it just so happens to have a garage area. The trailer is outfitted with MOR/ryde independent suspension axles, electric drum brakes, an automatic leveling system and heavy-duty steel skid rollers for durability. Two dual-stage furnaces and two ducted, low-profile air conditioners help tame the elements, while the 12-gallon water heater, enclosed and heated holding tanks, one-piece fiberglass molded shower and 12-volt DC multiplex light switch control system with dimmers add a touch of full-time class. Furniture appointments include upholstered dining chairs with a freestanding pedestal hardwood table, fabric recliners and a sofa bed, a solid-wood headboard, full-length bedroom cabinetry and a solid-wood pocket door between the bath and living area and wood valances. For even more luxury, New Horizons includes custom hardwood Mission-style cabinetry, a 32-inch LCD TV, a built-in microwave, laminate countertops, a ceiling fan and residential-grade carpet. The small four-foot garage space may not hold too many toys, but certainly comes in handy for storage and hobbies.

Northwood Desert Fox 29SB

Northwood Manufacturing builds the Desert Fox 29SB with adventure in mind. The rugged chassis, improved ground clearance and available four-season certification mean owners can go virtually anywhere at any time in style. The iconic exterior graphics are accented by large solar reflective windows that not only add to the aesthetics, but are designed to help keep the trailer cooler by reflecting hot sunlight. Outside, adventure-friendly standards include 16-inch wheels and tires, a motion-sensor patio work light and exterior speakers. Inside, residential touches such as the curved soffits above the cabinetry make the interior feel more like a luxury home than a toy hauler. Stainless-steel appliances blend seamlessly with the rich wood finish in the galley. The side-aisle bathroom allows for a completely private bathroom and bedroom. Other luxury items inside include a 32-inch LCD TV, 150-watt interior/exterior sound system and an available convert-a-U dinette.

Redwood 39HH

Redwood 39HH

Redwood 39HH

If you’re an avid snowmobiler, Redwood RV may have just the thing for you. When designing the 39HH, Redwood utilized what it describes as Clima-Tech construction, which means the windows are frameless, the attic double-ventilated and the insulation is top shelf. And that’s not even mentioning the 40,000-Btu furnace. Inside, the luxurious Diamond furniture has been specifically designed for full-time living and durability. Oversized dinette chairs, a 60-inch banquet table, leather recliners and a leather sofa mean you’ll never be uncomfortable, and the pillow-top mattresses ensure a good night’s sleep. A large wardrobe, chest of drawers and a washer/dryer option in the master bedroom area are luxurious features, as is the 40-inch LCD TV in the living area. The 9-foot-plus garage can be outfitted with a single bunk for overnight guests.

Heartland Road Warrior RW390 Interior

The brand-new Road Warrior 390 was designed to be a luxurious fifth-wheel first, and an SURV second. Standard interior features include solid-surface countertops, Amish-crafted cabinetry and a deep stainless-steel double sink with a high-rise faucet to accommodate larger pots and pans. Quartz lighting and hard-sided window valances work well with the large oversize window in the living area, allowing adventurers to bring the outside in. The master suite features a full 60-by-80-inch queen pillow top mattress, while the recessed front-cap storage in the wardrobe adds extra storage space in addition to the vanity with large drawers. The garage offers a 1-inch-thick plywood framed floor, and the integrated steel D-ring tie-downs make sure your toys stay in place while on the road. The cable-free, 8-foot ramp door is rated for 3,000 pounds, while the cargo area is equipped with AC-generator prep and a fuel station. Overhead storage, a Fan-Tastic fan, a pull-down rear screen and in-ceiling speakers allow off-roaders to enjoy their time inside the garage as well.
