House on the Rock

Originally Published in MotorHome Magazine

Alex Jordan envisioned the home he designed and built in the 1940s as a private weekend
retreat. Instead, the architectural marvel, perched on a 60-foot chimney of rock, was soon
drawing visitors by the droves – and rather than turn folks away, Jordan began asking for a
small donation to tour the 14-room house. In 1985, three years before Jordon sold the site
to longtime associate, Art Donaldson, the Infinity Room was opened.

Boasting walls of
glass, the room projects 218 feet over the breathtaking Wyoming Valley in Spring Green,
Wisconsin. A glass cocktail table even gives visitors a view of the forest floor – 156 feet
below. Today, the 40-acre complex has 16 buildings filled with unique collections and
eclectic displays, including the world’s largest carousel, valued at $4.5 million. The
complex, which now includes an inn and resort (with championship golf course) is open daily
for self-guided tours from mid-March through October.
