Honda Recaptures Waste Exhaust Heat

Originally Published in MotorHome Magazine

Honda Motor of Japan is researching the use of a Rankine
cycle-cogeneration unit that is designed to raise the efficiency of
hybrid vehicles and could eventually have application in motorhomes as
well. It recaptures the engine’s waste exhaust heat, which it then
converts to steam and then electricity to recharge the batteries.

The system employs a high-pressure water pump to force water
into an evaporator that creates steam, using the reaction of a catalyst.
The steam is then sent to an expansion tank where it turns an electric
generator that charges the batteries.
