Goodbye Careers — Hello American Adventure

Originally Published in MotorHome Magazine

Throwing caution to the wind and embarking out on the road as newbie
full-timers — and then writing a book of the adventures — seems to be a
trend; several have come across our desks lately.

Bert and Theresa Sherman’s “tell-all,” Goodbye Careers
— Hello American Adventure, is an interesting chronicle of their
16-month journey into “temporary retirement.” Once you get used to the
rhythm of the writing — it’s penned in an odd third-person narrative,
interspersed with entries from each of the diaries they kept — the book
is a refreshing and oftentimes self-effacing look at the people, places
and problems these two twentysomethings and their black labrador
encountered during 40,000 miles.

OK, so they traveled in a fifth-wheel instead of a motorhome.
As you read about Theresa’s obsessive cleanliness streak in their
136-square-foot living quarters, and their visits to places like Mesa
Verde National Park — where they crawled through narrow tunnels, only
to be stopped after a portly gentleman in front of them became wedged,
his feet dangling in the air — you’ll forgive them this slight
trespass.
