There’s a fine line between large enough for uncrowded comfort and small
enough to be easily drivable. The Georgie Boy Maverick 31-footer seems
to hit that target in a practical and effective way, and that’s a big
part of what made it a fun vehicle for an Oregon coast adventure.
We loaded the Maverick 315 SS with enough supplies for an extended
weekend for two. The Maverick is reasonably priced at $80,368 msrp,
nicely equipped with a few well-chosen options, and it lacks gimmicks
while providing all the necessities for a fun RVing time.
Due to the big streetside slideout, we enjoyed scads of
maneuvering room inside. The cook at the galley wasn’t being jostled by
every pedestrian that passed by. We could sit on the sofa and our
sprawled-out legs weren’t impediments to those walking by.
We get a bit nervous when we see that our test motorhome has a
long rear overhang relative to its wheelbase and overall length. In the
past, that setup has led to some truly nerve-jangling road trips during
which every gust of wind is a cause for concern. Yet something about the
315 hits the right mechanical note because it was mostly a joy to
drive.
We started with a run into the Cascades to Detroit Lake. From
the cruise up Interstate 5 to the winding two-lane road surrounding the
lake, the 315 held its own and we always felt in control. Corners and
surprise exits, when we didn’t pay enough attention to the road map
ahead of time, were handled with aplomb and resulted in minimal body
lean or other reactions.
Our test coach included the optional air bag suspension assist
($350) that probably helped a lot in the stability arena. Those extra
support bags back there help keep the rig level, as well as on an even
keel when cornering.
A Class C motorhome is a terrific starter vehicle for many
people, and the Georgie Boy Maverick 315 fills that niche very nicely.
It’s big enough for comfort, small enough to enjoy the trip and is
relatively affordable compared to many of the six-figure coaches on
today’s market. It’s an all-around fun motorhome that we enjoyed a lot.
