Selecting a motorhome is a never-ending give-and-take proposition. Features you love on a
gas chassis may not be available on a diesel, and vice versa, making it a study in
trade-offs. If you want a gas coach, choices have historically been limited to front power
with a mid- or rear-entry floorplan and the familiar cockpit doghouse. If you’re interested
in diesel power, most pusher setups concede a bit of valuable living area in back to
accommodate the various powerplant intrusions into the rear cabin — exactly where open
floor space is desirable. Most consumers (and many coach designers) would probably note
that the perfect coach has yet to be built — although Workhorse recently solved many
current limitations by creating its UFO, a one-chassis-does-it-all design. The UFO addresses the
shortcomings of traditional front-gas and rear-diesel chassis by offering a choice of gas
or diesel power — in pusher configurations. Plus, those very same propulsion systems sit
lower in the frame rails, allowing an unbroken floor plane from bow to stern. That gives
coach designers a blank slate, with maximum flexibility in floorplan design regardless of
the chosen power. Forest River is one of the first manufacturers to build on this new
platform, offering a 37-footer under the Georgetown banner. The company chose its master
suite 350 floorplan, with desk and sitting area (normally built on a front-engine chassis),
to showcase the versatility of the Workhorse UFO. On the road, the UFO — while not capable
of light speed — made very respectable 0-60 mph times, getting us to freeway speed without
effort. Workhorse has set a new bar height for multi-engine option, multifloorplan coach
applications. As builders like Forest River explore new possibilities for this chassis,
