Frommer’s Exploring America by RV, First Edition

Originally Published in MotorHome Magazine

Harry Basch and Shirley Slater, a husband-and-wife travel-writing team, have written an
excellent book based on their RV experiences. After 20 years’ exploration of 186 countries
by every possible means, from elephant to ski, Slater and Basch discovered motorhoming in
1992 and now prefer travel in their own coach. With a sense of humor, the couple even
shares their initial misadventures in a leased motorhome, to convince non-RVers that “if we
can do this, anyone can.” The 8 1/2 x 5-inch softcover volume is chock-full of information,
divided into three distinct parts: (1) practical advice for beginners, (2) descriptions of
10 great RV adventures, and (3) an RV buying-and-renting guide. Topics that are covered for
beginners include safety, checklists, insurance, money saving and road etiquette. Among the
10 itineraries are Alaska, Baja, the Ozarks and “The Lobster Coast”: New England and the
Canadian Maritimes. For each adventure, the authors have included comprehensive maps,
overnight stops, luxury RV parks, wildlife-watching sites, offbeat places to eat,
pick-your-own produce stands and sources to contact for additional information. Traveler’s
tips, recipes and other helpful suggestions are sprinkled throughout the text, as are
black-and-white photographs. Whether or not you’re familiar with the authors’ names from
their 15-year syndicated newspaper column about cruise-ship travel, you probably recognize
Frommer’s. This is but one of 250 titles the company publishes for every kind of traveler.
It may have taken awhile, but we’re not surprised that this respectable publisher finally
got around to covering RV travel. Frommer’s Exploring America by RV: First Edition (446
pages) is available in bookstores nationwide.
