Fleetwood Enterprises Inc. recently unveiled a complete revamping of its high-end American
Coach Class A motorhome lineup, based on a new Liberty diesel-pusher chassis design. The
Riverside, California, manufacturer’s redesigned American Coach series includes the
American Tradition and American Eagle diesel-pusher lines. Fleetwood’s highest-priced
diesel – the American Heritage – has not been restyled, while the American Dream has been
discontinued for the time being. The redesigned Tradition and Eagle – offered in seven and
nine floorplans in lengths of 38-40 and 40-42 feet, respectively – are mounted on
Fleetwood’s bridge-type construction Liberty chassis. The chassis was developed to provide
the torsional strength needed to accommodate the weight and wall penetration required for
the multiple slide units American Coach will be rolling out in its 2004 model year. With
the Liberty chassis’ tubular welded bridge-type construction, Fleetwood is able to offer a
quad-slide floorplan in the American Tradition and American Eagle for the first time.
Available engines include the turbocharged Cummins 370-hp ISL, 400-hp ISL or 500-hp ISM,
all equipped with Allison MH 4000 six-speed automatic transmissions. Liberty gross vehicle
weight ratings (gvwrs) are 34,200 pounds and 44,200 pounds, depending on the floorplan.
Exterior features in the redesigned American Coach series include stylized front caps, rear
spoilers, standard full-body paint with graphics and single-piece windshields. The Liberty
chassis provides 125 square feet of insulated storage space, with access through pneumatic
doors that can be fully or partially articulated for access with the slideouts extended or
retracted. Four interior decors are available in the Tradition, with a base retail price of
$250,600. The American Eagle, with a retail price starting at $314,000, offers seven
full-body paint schemes and six interior decor packages. Both coaches offer a choice of
four different woods, and options that include Raytheon Night Vision, an On-Star
communication system, plus Blind Spot Security Vision, which employs side- and rear-coach
video cameras that automatically activate when the turn signals are engaged.
