Bringing you the stories of America’s National Parks for our “Find Your Adventure” series has taken us down some dark, lonely roads in the middle of the night. Like the nerve-wracking stretch of Route 180 just south of the Grand Canyon where I swear we saw a massive bull elk ready to sprint across the roadway without warning every 20 feet or so!
Which explains why one of the first projects on our to-do list this summer was upgrading our lighting to enable us to see this kind of trouble coming further down the road. We started by adding a pair of six-element LED driving lights mounted on a solid license plate bracket from Rigid Industries. Simply put, the improvement compared to the stock headlights is phenomenal, with the added light doing a much better job of illuminating both the road ahead and all of those critters we’d really prefer not to run into or even over.
Because more light is better on a deserted stretch of road, we also upgraded our rig’s standard fog lights with bright white LED replacements from Diode Dynamics. The process couldn’t have been simpler, as all it required was to remove the stock bulbs and replace them with the LED versions. Easy peasy.
Taken together, these changes can be one of the best peace-of-mind investments you can make if you find yourself doing a lot of driving before dawn or after dusk.
