In a world where today’s Next Big Thing is tomorrow’s old news, anything that can endure, and even thrive, for a century is worth celebrating. Like the National Park Service, for instance.
As the National Park Service approaches its 100th birthday this August, we here at MotorHome are beginning a yearlong celebration of what some have called America’s Best Idea: our national parks. To be specific, the 400-plus units – including 59 national parks, 78 national monuments, 125 national historic sites, 29 national memorials, 10 national seashores and much more – all being protected and preserved for both us and future generations of Americans to enjoy by the men and women of the NPS.
Toward this end, our new Find Your Adventure series will spotlight both national parks and the unique adventures to be had in them (see “In Hot Water” in the January issue of MotorHome and posted on this website). Look for activities that run the gamut from mild to wild, all designed to make your visit absolutely unforgettable.
Just a few examples of the national park adventures coming up in the months ahead:
- We’ll take you canoeing on the tranquil waters of northern Minnesota’s Voyageurs National Park;
- We’ll share what it’s like to crawl on your belly through rarely visited sections of Mammoth Cave National Park;
- We’ll tell you how you can relive the moment when the Wright Brothers first took flight on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, home to both the Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout national seashores;
- We’ll tell you what you need to know to get a rare view of Grand Canyon National Park from the back of a sure-footed mule.
