Facebook Petition Seeks to Prevent National Park Closures

Originally Published in MotorHome Magazine

A group of Facebookers wants to prevent national parks from being
closed. To that end, “Sleeping in Tents” is asking Facebook members to
“sign” a petition opposing budget cuts that would result in national
park closures.

The petition reads: “Dear Congress: I am concerned that recent cost
saving strategies of closing state parks will be applied at the
national level. I understand budgeting during these difficult times is a
challenge but I respectfully ask you to not close any National Parks as
part of your cost saving measures. Our National Park system is one of
our greatest treasures, and it must be protected.”

With a single click, Facebookers can sign the virtual petition and
can then post their action on their “wall,” thus encouraging others to
do the same.

Sleeping in Tents said its goal is to compile 250,000 signatures, and it plans to deliver the petition on Oct. 31. Its Facebook page currently has nearly 65,000 “fans,” so reaching that goal is a real possibility.

The group’s Web site
says it “covers tips, gear and places for outdoor enthusiasts while
working to help preserve and expand our state and national parks.”
