Environmental Tips for DIYers

Originally Published in MotorHome Magazine

Do-it-yourselfers often change their own motorhome’s oil, but they should also take time to
protect the environment.

  • When draining the oil, store it in a clean, leakproof container. Auto-parts stores
sell some excellent containers that can serve as both a drain pan and storage
    container.
  • Don’t mix used oil with other fluids, such as antifreeze, brake fluid or solvents.
Keep them separate and label them. Also, thoroughly drain old oil filters and store
them in a leakproof plastic bag or container.
  • Never dump used fluids in water or on the ground. Just one gallon of waste oil can
contaminate millions of gallons of water. Bring waste products to approved recycling
centers. Check with your local government for the nearest location and hours of
    operation.
