While some Vermont campgrounds have suffered damage as a result of Tropical Storm Irene, more than 70 privately owned and operated campgrounds will be open for Labor Day weekend, according to the Vermont Campground Association (VCA).
“Some are cleaning up downed trees, but most are ready for visitors,” said VCA executive director Peter Daniels in a press release, adding that county fairs and festivals have also reopened for the holiday weekend.
And while there have been some road closures in Vermont as a result of the storm, most roads leading to campgrounds are open, Daniels said. Campers should call the campgrounds they plan to visit for the most up to date road information, he said.
While most privately owned and operated campgrounds in Vermont are open for business, at least two campgrounds suffered severe damage. They include Camping on the Battenkill in Arlington and Abel Mountain Campground in Braintree, where flooding destroyed the campground office and bathhouses. Both campgrounds are currently closed.
The Vermont Campground Association represents the campground industry in Vermont and hosts CampVermont.com, a travel planning website for Vermont camping enthusiasts.
