Inside in the Newmar Cypress, even if you’re well over six feet tall, the higher-than-average cranium clearance means you can stand straight up in front of the mirror, get your clothes out without crouching, and rise out of bed without risk of imprinting “Winegard” on your forehead from the TV antenna. Six-and-a-half feet of headroom never felt so good.
With some of its larger towables over 10 tons loaded, Newmar is also well-versed in solid foundations. The Cypress rides on 12-inch I-beam frame rails, with a 5/8-inch Structurwood floor deck, aluminum framing and fiberglass walls and a BriteTEK roof. Heated and insulated holding tanks are enclosed with aluminum sheet laminated to 5/8-inch-bead foam, and an undermounted spare tire is standard.
With MOR/ryde equalizer leaf-sprung suspension, E-Z lube axles, shock absorbers and Goodyear RST tires, the Cypress followed our tow rig nicely.
The stable three-step entry puts you right in the midst of the salon. To the left and under a wall of cabinets is a pair of loungers and an end table, surrounded by windows. Directly ahead is the fold-out couch, with foot rests and a tulip lamp on either side. Immediately on the right is the kitchen, with the foot of the L-shape holding the sink. Across from the kitchen in the slide is the dinette, a fixed base table with two freestanding chairs.
At the forward end of the living area is the entertainment center, with a 27-inch TV, DVD and radio.
In the bedroom, the queen bed is essentially the forward slideout section with storage underneath — after you lift with gas strut assist.
A folding divider sets off the bath area, typical in layout and equipped with the monitor panel above the sink. The shower is plenty tall, and the wardrobe opposite the towel bar can be plumbed for a washer/dryer or stackables. The cabinet over the toilet houses electrical for both AC and DC systems. Among the light switches on the wall are two for the speakers in the bedroom, a nice touch.
Newmar’s entry-level fiver starts at $43,425 — which is a lot of trailer for that money.
