I’ll start by saying the Coachmen Sportscoach Legend 40 QS is nicer than
my apartment, and that includes its appliances. The reason I mention
that is because the first thing I thought when I entered the 40-foot
coach and stepped onto its ceramic tile floor is that it looked –
despite its spacious floorplan – like a cozy, well-appointed apartment,
one that I wouldn’t mind calling home.
The two flat-screen LCD TVs in its living area make my one flat-screen
at home look like a 1950s television set with rabbit ears. An added
bonus for those who like to watch TV while dining, and for couples that
can’t ever agree on what to watch, is that a 19-inch LCD TV is located
behind the dinette, while the much-larger 32-inch set over the cockpit
can easily be viewed at the same time. But it’s not all about TVs, and
if you’re the kind that turns off the tube while dining and likes
looking out the window at Mother Nature’s bounty, the Legend has an
oversized dinette window.
I also appreciated the motorhome’s comfortable leather sleeper
sofa and leather love seat, so much that I wanted to lay down, flip on
the TV and relax, but I couldn’t decide which I liked better so I went
back to exploring. The hardwood cabinet doors and molding add another
touch of homeyness to the living room and galley, and come in Century
Glazed Maple, Brazilian Cherry or Sicilian Cherry.
For the gourmet, the coach’s galley has a roll-out pantry and
15-cubic-foot residential refrigerator, out of which I envisioned taking
something a little nicer than my usual leftovers from my minuscule
fridge at home and cooking it up on the three-burner range with sealed
burners.
It’s hard not to look outside the Legend, which is built on a
Freightliner chassis with a 425-hp Cummins diesel engine, because it has
an immense 56-inch-tall one-piece windshield. From the cockpit it
looked like I was staring out of my own living room window, but was more
comfortable in the ultraleather captain’s chair than my own
worn-leather chair at home. The passenger chair even has a power
footrest that, when deployed, can alleviate the leg discomfort during
long periods between stops. The rest of the cockpit is state-of-the-art,
featuring a color backup monitor with distance markers, easy-to-read
gauges, adjustable foot pedals and telescopic steering wheel.
The back of this coach is just as nice. It has a fiberglass
shower with a textured glass door reminiscent of an upscale home.
However, taller owners might find the shower a bit constricting, but
will appreciate the roomy lav that offers plenty of legroom.
The bedroom offers up more amenities, including a DVD/CD player
and another 19-inch LCD TV. The Legend also comes standard with a
queen-size bed with deluxe innerspring mattress. But I found the bedroom
windows too small, making the sleeping quarters a bit dark even in the
daytime – which is fine if you’re watching TV. And speaking of TVs, if
three inside aren’t enough for you, the Legend 40 QS has a fourth
outside in its exterior entertainment center.
