Cliffs of Fire

Originally Published in MotorHome Magazine

On U.S. Highway 191 toward the Utah/Wyoming border, Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area was found by one-armed explorer, John Wesley Powell, as he floated past the vermillion cliffs towering above the Green River in 1869.

So impressed was Powell by the 1,000-foot-high escarpments that resemble red flames reaching for the sky at sunrise, the name he bestowed on them was eerily appropriate.
