Chasing Waterfalls near Portland, Oregon

Originally Published in Trailer Life Magazine

Oregon’s tallest waterfall, Multnomah Falls, reaches nearly 620 feet and is located in the Columbia River Gorge, just east of Portland, Ore. Also billed as the United States’ second-tallest year-round waterfall, Multnomah Falls offers miles of hiking trails with an abundance of striking views. Nearby, underground springs from Larch Mountain run off into the falls, cascading water into a misty, lush grotto below.

A viewing area of the falls is located in a carved opening along the rock face, while hiking trails take visitors to the first or second tier of the falls. Geologic history is highlighted at the cliff of the falls where five flows of Yakima basalt are exposed, chronicling millions of years of environmental changes.
