The “belt,” where nine quartz mines are open to visitors (several are also commercial operations), is about 30 miles wide, spanning the Ouachitas from Hot Springs west to Pencil Bluff. Many of the mines are scattered around Mount Ida, a small community toward the western edge of the belt that bills itself as the “Quartz Crystal Capital of the World.”
