Back to Nature: Starcraft Mossy Oak

Mossy Oak’s modus operandi — or MO’s MO — is to embody the outdoor lifestyle. Earlier this year, the Mississippi- based retailer partnered with Starcraft RV, whose audience is “recreational vehicle owners who are outdoor lovers, adventure seekers and boundary pushers.” The goal was to create a travel trailer that appeals to this group of RV enthusiasts. Starcraft’s Mossy Oak, with serene Mother Nature-inspired decals featuring leaves, pine branches and bark set against an earthy two-tone aluminum-clad trailer, is available in 13 floorplans ranging from 21 feet, 8 inches to 32 feet, 5 inches. For those watching their weight, the Mossy Oak Lite line is offered in seven floorplans.

We checked out the family-oriented 30-foot, 7-inch 26BHS, and immediately after walking through the entry door, we liked the functional and inviting floorplan. A single slide expands the galley into a welcoming area with plenty of walk-around room, and windows above the four-seater dinette and two-seat trifold sofa offer an expansive view. Valances over the windows sport a Mossy Oak design, and the bottom portions of both windows slide open for airflow. To the right is the bedroom, sectioned off by wood pocket doors for access to both sides of the queen bed. And to the left of the galley are double-over-double bunks and the bathroom.

Much of what makes the 26BHS so inviting is the kitchen, set up for the chef to move about freely with unobstructed access to appliances and an expansive white Formica countertop that angles around to subtly separate the galley from the entryway. The kitchen is a wonderful place to greet people as they come through the entry. And the window over the sink lets you see who is standing outside the door. The commercial-grade linoleum floor has a wood-plank look and ties in beautifully with the Barrington Espresso hardwood cabinet doors, stainless-steel appliances and dark Poise Brindle leatherette cushions.

A 5½-inch-deep double-basin sink is housed at the end of the counter near the entry, leaving a large prep area between it and the range. The ABS plastic sink should not stain, but hot metal pans are a no-no. The kitchen’s three-burner Dometic range and oven, 6-cubic-foot two-way fridge and microwave share space with plenty of storage. The cabinet under the sink can also be accessed on the opposite side near the entry door. Three cutlery drawers have positive-catch latches, and a floor-to-ceiling pantry houses five shelves that are almost 2 feet deep.

Separating the bedroom from the living area, a center wall with TV prep has double glass doors above and solid ones below. Here, a shelf is handy for keeping keys as you come and go. For TV viewing, the best seat is the one closest to the dinette on the trifold sofa. The sofa has 5-inch-thick cushions and center cupholders. It folds down into a 42-by-62-inch bed, and the neighboring dinette makes into a similar-size bed.

Closed off from the galley with privacy curtains are 48-by-75-inch bunks, each with a 300-pound limit. The bunks have more than 2 feet of headroom, and the one who calls dibs on the lower bunk gets the window. Occupants can flip around so their heads face the galley for a good view of the TV.

Up front, the bedroom’s queen bed has a 6-inch-thick mattress, a wardrobe and shelf on each side, and some walking space. Overhead are four ducts for circulating (or closing off) air from the 15,000-Btu air conditioner, and the Dometic Quick-Cool feature routes about 80 percent of the cold air in the living area when the louvers in the ceiling shroud are opened. The air conditioner did an admirable job keeping the interior cool on a 92-degree day.

The bathroom counter’s angled design matches the one in the kitchen, and there’s space to keep hand soap, towels and other supplies handy. A shower curtain with the Mossy Oak pattern is attached to a rod that curves outward for maximum space in the 20-by-37-inch shower. Step up into the shower, and there’s almost 6½ feet of headroom with the overhead vent, but no shut-off valve on the handheld sprayer. The bathroom door cannot be opened unless the slide is extended at least 4 inches. Everything else is accessible with the slide retracted — bunks, kitchen, fridge and bedroom.

The entry door opens to be flush against the trailer. Outside features include a handheld water sprayer, waterproof speakers under the 18-foot Solera power awning, an exterior propane connector for a barbecue, solar-power port, electrical outlets, four manual stabilizer jacks and a sealed underbelly. Pass-through storage has push-button LEDs, and doors are held up with magnetic catches.

An overhead shelf between the bedroom's wardrobes holds nighttime items. The Mossy Oak Obsession Package includes a nature-inspired bedspread and pillow shams with a leaf-and-tree motif.

For the full Mossy Oak experience, the optional Obsession Package includes indoor decor that matches the outside graphics: dinette cushions, pillows, bedspread and shams, bunk window curtain and privacy curtains. Outdoor lovers, rejoice!
