Nissan recently showed off the new 2016 Titan pickup truck at the Detroit auto show, with an on-sale date due later this year. It’s been a dozen years since the Tittan was redesigned, but the upcoming changes may make the wait worthwhile! Three different engines will be offered, including V-6 and V-8 gas engines and a turbodiesel V-8. Titan will come in three cab styles; Single, King, and Crew Cab and three lengths. Aerodynamics will be improved, with front, roof and tailgate spoilers, underbody covers, and other aero tweaks to reduce wind resistance.
Titan XDs will have the torquey Cummins 5.0-liter turbodiesel V-8. It features a two-stage turbocharger system for reduced lag and is rated at 310 horsepower and 555 lb-feet of torque. XDs get a stronger front suspension and leaf-spring rear end with an American Axle differential and available electronic locking rear differential. Nissan has stated it will have a maximum tow rating of more than 12,000 pounds, and a heavy-duty six-speed automatic transmission. Titan XD also will have available watertight locking storage boxes in the bed.
Four-wheel drive will be offered, along with hill-descent control, hill-start assist, and trailer-sway control, tow and haul mode, and an improved trailer-light system. The 2016 Titan offers a rearview camera, which helps with hitching a trailer. There’s also a built-in gooseneck tow hitch. Titan comes with choices of 17-, 18-, and 20-inch wheels, and includes heavy duty four-wheel disc brakes.
The 2016 model gets wide-opening doors, a spray-in bedliner, and bed mounting channels and tie downs. Surround-view cameras will be optional, along with blind-spot monitors and parking sensors, a navigation system, and smartphone connectivity. There will be more storage capacity in the front passenger area and back seat. In back, there’s now lockable underseat storage. Other options include LED headlamps and bedrail lights; a damped tailgate; rear power point; Rockford Fosgate audio system and remote start.
