The 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL is a full-size SUV that’s made in America, and has a substantial tow rating. Wood trim and rich leather upholstery add a warm ambience. Interior appointments include a seven-inch in-dash infotainment screen, controlled by an advanced operating system called COMAND.
There are four powertrain choices. The GL 350 has a six-cylinder turbodiesel rated 240 hp and 455 pound-feet of torque, with an EPA 26 mpg highway mileage rating. The GL450 is now powered by a 3-liter twin-turbo V-6 with 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. EPA ratings of 17 mpg city and 21. Next up, in the GL 550, is the twin-turbo, direct-injected 4.7-liter which puts out 429 horsepower. The top-of-the-line GL 63 AMG is rated 550 hp.
A seven-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive are standard on all models. Other features include electric power steering, and the GL’s independent suspension has air shocks for a plush ride. Optional adaptive suspension counteracts body lean.
An off-road package provides a low range transfer case, locking center differential, special traction and stability control settings, and adjustable ride height. Tow ratings are up to 7500 pounds.
