2012 Scion xD: Affordable, Efficient Dinghy

The 2012 Scion xD is one simple, affordable dinghy.

The diminutive four-door can be flat-towed with a manual transmission without those pesky mileage limitations.  No more starting and idling again with the Scion.

While the car is certainly small, and easy to tow at a max of 2,665 pounds, there is still plenty of room.  Scion boasts seating for five, but the back seat will surely get crowded with a trio of adults.

The Scion, however, has plenty of cargo room at least for a subcompact dinghy vehicle.  With 10.5 cubic feet of room for picnic baskets, coolers and everything else, the xD is primed for easy short and long trips away from the campsite.

The low weight pared with a 128HP 1.8-L engine delver plenty of zip in either the 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic setups.  That zip doesn’t detract from the mileage though, Scion reports that the xD gets 33 MPG on the highway and 27 in the city for a combined MPG of around 29 MPG – not a bad break from the RV.

As for looks, the Scion xD looks like the attractive baby of a crossover SUV and a Volkswagen beetle and is eye-catching in any of the eight color options.  The front bumper looks good, but it also leaves plenty of room for the addition of a tow bar.

Scion DashThe dash for the xD is straightforward and functional. Scion went a step further by putting volume, calling (via Bluetooth) and track control directly on the steering wheel for easy access.  The xD comes standard with a Pioneer sound system and easy access to music, podcasts or digital audiobooks through it’s Bluetooth system.

While the Scion xD certainly won’t be doing much doing any off-road driving, small families and couples looking for a fuel-efficient dinghy should take a look at the 2012 Scion xD.
