It wasn’t long ago that pickleball was a little-known backyard game. Today, it’s America’s fastest-growing sport — and for many RV travelers, it’s become one of the biggest reasons to choose where they spend the season.
At Cal-Am Resorts, we recognized pickleball’s potential long before it became a national phenomenon. What started with a handful of courts has grown into more than 100 pickleball courts across our 12 Arizona RV resorts, creating vibrant communities where guests improve their health, build friendships, and discover a renewed sense of purpose.

Easy Learning Curve
One of pickleball’s greatest strengths is its accessibility. The rules are easy to learn, the court is smaller than a tennis court, and the game places less stress on joints than many traditional sports. That means newcomers can often enjoy a competitive match after just a few lessons, while experienced players continue to challenge themselves for years.
For many retirees and seasonal RV travelers, that first game opens the door to much more than exercise.
Physical activity is certainly part of the appeal. Pickleball improves balance, coordination, agility, and cardiovascular fitness while encouraging players to stay active without overexertion. But just as important are the social connections that naturally develop around the courts.

Fostering Friendships
Every morning at Cal-Am Resorts, courts fill with players greeting familiar faces, welcoming first-time visitors, and organizing friendly matches. New guests quickly discover they don’t need to arrive with a playing partner. Resident mentors help beginners learn the fundamentals, while organized clinics, social play, and tournaments make it easy to become part of the community.
Those relationships are often what guests remember most.
Many lifelong friendships have started over a simple game of pickleball on our courts. Players encourage one another, celebrate milestones together, and create a welcoming atmosphere that turns neighbors into friends. For many snowbirds returning each winter, the pickleball courts have become the social hub of their seasonal home.
The game also provides valuable mental stimulation. Every rally requires quick thinking, communication, strategy, and anticipation. Players continually develop new skills, adjust to different opponents, and challenge themselves to improve—keeping both body and mind engaged.

High-Caliber Players
Our commitment to the sport recently reached another milestone through our partnership with the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA). As a sponsor of the prestigious Mesa Cup, we help connect our guests with the highest level of professional competition while celebrating the sport that has become such an important part of daily life throughout our communities.
Pickleball’s incredible growth isn’t just about competition—it’s about connection. It brings people outdoors, encourages healthy living, creates opportunities to meet new friends, and gives travelers another reason to look forward to each day.
For RVers seeking an active lifestyle, the best destinations today offer more than beautiful scenery and warm weather. They offer opportunities to play, learn, laugh, and belong. At Cal-Am Resorts, we’ve seen firsthand how one simple paddle sport has transformed the RV experience—and we’re excited to see where the next game leads.
