SUV Changes Reduce Fatalities

Originally Published in Trailer Life Magazine

Lower ride heights of newer SUVs have reduced the number of fatalities in car-to-SUV
collisions, according to a new report from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The
study found that the number of deaths in autos hit in side-impact crashes with SUVs dropped
by almost half, as a result of manufacturers reducing ride heights and installing front
ends that match up more with the bumper systems on cars. The changes were the result of an
agreement in 2003 between automakers and the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration. The drop in deaths from frontal crashes between cars and SUVs was smaller,
with about 18 to 21 percent fewer deaths reported.
