Texans Turn to RVs During Winter Storm Blackouts
Independent Power Sources, Amenities, and Insulation Make RVs a Safe Shelter During Unprecedented Event

Winter storm Uri has wreaked havoc on Texas with below freezing temperatures, snow, and mass power outages. According to Camper Report, this has led many RVers in Texas to temporarily move into their RVs.
The article sites posts RVers have made on Facebook detailing their decision to temporarily relocate into their RVs and trailers as they ride out the blackouts. Because RVs have their own power sources – batteries, solar panels, propane fuel, and generators –owners can move into them to stay safe and warm while they wait for power to return to their homes.
RVs are a great source of shelter during emergencies like the one that is currently being experienced in Texas. As the article points out, even a small travel trailer with a full tank of propane can keep its owners warm for days. And, because there is less square footage to heat and keep warm, an RV is a more efficient use of a generator than a full-sized home.
Most RVs also come with modern amenities like fireplaces and heated flooring that keep owners warm. RVs are also insulated—some with special winterization packages. This makes RVs a great option for sheltering in should its owner suddenly be without power during a winter storm or unsafe temperatures.
RVs have proven to be a helpful tool during natural disaster prior to the situation in Texas. RVs were used to keep frontline workers and high-risk family members isolated and safe early in the Covid-19 pandemic. Remote workers also found RVs as a great option for a “home” office – away from the noise and activity of their actual home.
