Find Your Adventure: Smartphone Saver

One of the best things about our yearlong Find Your Adventure series celebrating the 100th birthday of the National Park Service are all the fun new activities we’ll be introducing you to, from sea kayaking to canyoneering. While the range of adventures is quite broad (see the first of our feature stories, “In Hot Water,” for one of the more “grueling” outings), the one thing they all have in common is that they’ll get you out there enjoying the beauty of our national parks.

That said, this pursuit of new adventures can also have a distinct downside where personal electronics are concerned. As miraculous as our new smartphones and tablets are, accidental drops and unexpected encounters with dirt and water often result in that shiny new gadget being transformed into an expensive paperweight.

That’s where the LifeProof FRE smartphone and tablet cases come in. The FRE offers rugged protection from drops up to 6 1/2 feet, as well as sealing your device off from the harmful effects of water, dirt and snow. A variety of handy accessories, including a windshield suction cup mount, add to the case’s versatility.

We tested the LifeProof FRE case on our Apple iPhone 6 Plus quite inadvertently when it fell out of our jacket pocket and straight into a muddy puddle one rainy afternoon (Murphy’s Law, dontcha know). The good news is there was no appreciable damage. We’ve yet to encounter enough snow or deep water (the manufacturer says it can be submerged up to 6 feet for as long as an hour) to put it through a full test, but if the results so far are any indication, we now have one less thing to worry about when we’re out researching the next installment in our national parks Find Your Adventure series.
