There has been an increase of air bag recalls lately, with eight in the
last three months and 15 through August 2002. That’s up from 12 for all
of last year, 15 in 2000 and 17 in 1999.
This is likely to continue due to the increased number and
complexity of front, side and side-curtain airbags, and new regulations
for bag sensors.
In 2003 model vehicles, air bags will have sensors that determine
how large the passengers are, how much they weigh and how far away from
the airbag they are at impact.
