Dime Store Microwaves

Microwave ovens offer convenient cooking options whether at home or on the road. With the latest in microwave innovations, you can create masterful meals with just the touch of a few buttons. But can a microwave designed for the home be used in your RV kitchen, too?

Microwave

RV microwaves, such as those made by Dometic Corporation, are designed and installed for safety on the road. These microwaves feature special venting to make sure the appliance operates correctly and safely. Residential models are designed differently and are not vented in the same way and could lead to problems. When used in an RV, microwaves must be properly vented so that neighboring cabinets do not become overheated – preventing a potential fire hazard.

Overheating due to poor ventilation can also lead to electrical problems.

Another risk associated with using a countertop microwave purchased from a discount store is that it can cause damage in transit if it is not properly secured in place. An RV microwave comes with permanent mounting brackets to prevent movement and possible damage during travel. A freestanding model or one not properly secured could easily move while traveling and cause damage.

Microwave

Some warranties on residential microwaves do not cover use in RVs. Models sold in discount stores are not built with the intent that the product will be used in an RV, whereas models manufactured by Dometic are created with that specific purpose.

So before hitting the road, make sure your RV microwave has been built to travel.
