Wilderness
Lakes (NACO) - Menifee, CA
Two
U-shaped canals curve into a shape resembling a heart at the NACO
Wilderness Lakes preserve. Pumping with channel catfish, these
stocked canals seem to invigorate the many "fisherfolks"
seeking serenity and a great catch along its banks. Outstanding
water access — you can cast a line directly from roughly one
third of the park's 519 sites — and the mild climate attracts
schools of members to this fishing haven.
Big
hauls – some between 12 and 15 pounds – occur with such
regularity that the preserve pays a per pound rate so that members
release fish weighing more than five pounds to keep the population
high. Everyone nine and older must purchase a fishing permit, and
there is a three-fish limit per permit, per day. Equipment rentals,
permits, tackle and bait are available at the store, as well as
refreshments and supplies to fortify your fishing endeavors.

For those who’d
rather spend their quality time indoors, the coolest place to hang
out is the billiard room in the adult lodge. This retreat also features
a large common area with overstuffed chairs and a big-screen satellite
TV/VCR, indoor phones and two modem connections, as well as a nice
meeting area. Within short walking distance is the adult pool and
spa.
Younger
campers have their own game room with pool tables and video games
in the Family Lodge, directly behind the kitchen and meeting hall
where members gather for Sunday services and other events. Outside,
a sparkling rectangular pool and two spas beckon. The Activities
Office is also part of this complex — handy for checking out
board games, puzzles, or sports equipment.

And,
sports facilities abound. Near the Family Lodge are an 18-hole
mini-golf course and a basketball court. Closer to the Adult Lodge
are a ballfield, a volleyball net, pickelball courts, horseshoe
pits, and a shuffleboard area. There's also an outdoor nature
center with fire ring and a playground.

Eager
to explore the area? The Temecula
Wine Country is only 20 minutes away. Of the wineries along
Rancho California Road, Calloway Vineyard and Winery has the largest
production as well as daily tours and wine tasting. But if you'd
like a full glass of what you've just tasted, head to the Baily
Winery: Carol's Restaurant & Deli is on-hand with great food,
gourmet gifts, and their wine, of course. At the end of the road,
Wilson Creek Winery offers spectacular views and luscious gardens
to heighten your experience.
If
you prefer hiking, the Eastside Reservoir Project is just "over
the hill" from the preserve on Winchester Road. A winding
path takes you to the top of the viewpoint, where you can glimpse
the work of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.
They imported water from the Colorado River and Northern California
tributaries to create this gem between the Diamond and Domenigoni
Valleys.
Other
convenient jaunts include the Santa
Rosa Plateau Hiking Trails, the Winchester Cheese Factory,
and Old
Town Temecula. The splendors of the coast and San
Diego are just a 90-minute drive away as well.
